Comedian and national hero Jimmy Carr has this week been courageous enough to voice what everybody was already thinking but was too afraid to say about the murdered girlfriend of South African athlete Oscar Pistorius.
Carr – who used his speech at the Q Magazine Awards to finally give a voice to the simmering, but largely unspoken, public consensus that Reeva Steenkamp had brought her death upon herself by spending too long in the bathroom – was hailed as a hero by the crowd who sat in a deathly approving silence.
“Finally!” one audience member commented afterwards. “For weeks, we’ve been waiting for someone to take Steenkamp down a peg or two, but Jimmy’s the first guy who’s had the guts to say it out loud.”
“That’s how you speak truth to power, man!” he added reverently. “What a hero…”
