I will admit it was with some trepidation that I began growing out my mustache recently. I was worried people would think I look weird, or that I was just being lazy – but somehow, all my friends keep saying what a nice guy I am just because of the handlebar on my face.
Every time I go into the pub I hear “Keep it up mate!” and “It’s all for a good cause, isn’t it?”. It’s funny because I’ve never thought of my facial hair as a good cause, but it seems like people are really supporting that particular part of my appearance at the moment.
It doesn’t stop there. Some of my co-workers and extended family even want to give me money to keep it up! It’s incredible. People just assume I have some kind of mustache-related fund they can contribute to. If this continues I’ll have a ton of extra cash come Christmas time. The other day I walked into Pizza Express and they had a special 2-for-1 deal, just for people with mustaches! I don’t want to jinx it, but I think I’m onto something here.
Around this same time last year it seemed like the mustache was back in style in a big way – but then it faded away before I could get on the bandwagon. Now it seems like it’s finally returned as the must-have facial accessory, and I couldn’t be happier about it. You know, that whole ‘ironic 80s thing’. Magnum PI, Mark Lawrenson, Freddy Mercury. Love all those guys. Now I can finally join the club!
Gee, it’s great to see so many mustaches around now. I don’t want to speak too soon, but I think I might have started a bit of a trend. Loads of people in the office seem to be following my lead and joining in, people I see in the street, even sports players are getting in on it! “Long may it continue” – that’s what I say.
